Sermon for February 10, 2019

Deacon, Discipleship, Sermons
First Reading: Isaiah 6:1-8 Gospel Reading: Luke 5:1-11 Prayer for the Day: Gracious God, just as when Jesus stepped into Simon Peter's boat, you come into our lives and we can never be the same. Subside our fears, give us ears to hear your call to discipleship, and the ability to step out of our comfort zones and follow you. Amen Possible hymns: Amazing Grace; Here I Am, Lord This is the 5th Sunday of Epiphany.  Epiphany is the church season when we start to discover who Jesus is - beyond the baby we celebrate at Christmas.  Jesus is Emmanuel, the one who integrates divinity and humanity.  He comes into the world to reveal God and to show us God’s kingdom.  Today in our lessons, we see another manifestation of who…

Matt 25:31-46 Sheep and Goats  Our Gospel is from the 25th chapter of Matthew. Today is Christ the King Sunday.  It is also last day of the church calendar.  Next Sunday we begin a new church year with Advent!   On this day we celebrate the Reign of Christ.  While it is true that we remember that Christ is our King every Sunday – on this Sunday we make special efforts to affirm that statement.  All the other empires that might strive to assert their power over us – the financial markets, political realms, or status symbols that hope for our supreme allegiance – they do not hold dominance.  Instead we end our church year declaring that Christ is our King!  God is sovereign ruler of our lives. Time and again,…

Matthew 18: 15-20 and Romans 13: 8-14 There is a saying that we have 2 ears and 1 mouth because we are to listen twice as much as we speak.   It is advice that is good for me – for all of us.  It is also hard to do.  Listening, really listening, is difficult.  There is another saying:  Whenever two or more are gathered … it can be really hard to get along!   These two clever sayings likely go hand in hand.  So, what does Jesus say?  Well, first, that God will be present in the gathering of people.  Whether that get-together is congenial or not, God is present.  Also, that we are to listen to one another when there is conflict.  Four times in the first 3 verses in…

Gospel Reading: Matthew 14:22-33; First Reading: Genesis 37:1-4, 12-28 In some ways it may feel like we’ve heard this story before. This is the second time Jesus had been with the disciples on the rough sea. The first time was when he was asleep in the boat in the storm, woke up, and commanded Peace, Be Still, and everything was calm.  Right before this story today is the story where Jesus ends up feeding 5,000 or 15,000 or 20,000 (remember it was 5,000 plus women and children). So the disciples have been witness to some of Jesus’ great miracles before we catch up with them today. They’ve already seen what God is capable of, even on the sea.  Our story today begins at sea. Jesus had sent the disciples away in the boat, while he went up the mountain to finally…

2nd Sunday After Pentecost, Year A First reading Genesis 18:1-15,21:1-7; Psalm 116:1-2,12-19; Second reading Romans 5:1-8; Gospel Matthew 9:35-10:8   God, I humbly come before you asking for the courage to speak your word to the people, even when it might be uncomfortable.  I ask that you put your word in the hearts of those who hear me – the word that they need to hear, which may not be the words that I speak.  May we all be moved to action as your disciples.   Amen A quick review of the previous chapters of Matthew shows us that Jesus has been very busy.  He has preached about everything from divorce to giving to the needy, from anger to loving your enemies.  He has taught the disciples how to pray.  Jesus…

5th Sunday After Pentecost, Year A First Reading: Genesis 24:34-38, 42-49, 58-67; Psalm 45:10-17; Second Reading: Romans 7:15-25a; Gospel: Matthew 11:16-19, 25-30 Much like last week, I feel like I need to begin by addressing our reading from Genesis - and the Psalm, too. In Genesis we hear the telling of Rebekah joining Abraham and Isaac’s family, taken away from her own - as it was then. It appears as though she has some agency in the story - it seems she is given a choice to go or not (whether or not it was actually a choice in her culture is unsure), but this is unlike Isaac, who is more or less just a sidenote in almost every story that involves him. It gives us a hint of the…
